A Look Back on 2018

We are so excited to start 2019 with you all! It’s been a busy year full of exciting stuff, so we decided to do a little review of 2018!

One of the sweetest moments of 2018 was exploring how maple syrup is made! The wonder and excitement could be felt as the children saw first hand how this classic Canadian condiment gets its way to your breakfast table!

Last spring, our very own Karen Eilersen had the honour of writing a couple chapters in the textbook is titled “Take a Look – Observation and Portfolio Assessment in Early Childhood”, which also features photos from Discovery Child Care! Find more information about this textbook on Amazon. We hope to make more contribution to education this year.

It didn’t feel long before the snow melted and we were back in the garden in spring to plant our summer veggies! Watching new life spring up from the soil is always magical, and never ceases to amaze the kids. Plus, it was fun to dig in the dirt again.

Summer found us soon after the spring thaw, and with it, butterflies, bugs and life! We bring in caterpillars to educate the children on the growth stages, and the importance of releasing these beautiful butterflies into the wild. It was extra special because our parents showed up just in to see the last couple fly away. “Bye-bye Butterfly!”

Our summer camps began soon after the butterflies flew away. We had a ton of fun learning about some of Canada’s inventors, heroes and creators, as we found out about the invention of basketball by James Naismith, the Cancer Fighter, Terry Fox, “The Great One”, Wayne Gretzky, the invention of the telephone by Alexander Graham Bell and other such heroes as Laura Secord.

That’s right, her name is way more than just a chocolate shop! Outside, we enjoyed some time in the sprinkler, plenty of group games and creating with chalk and paint.

This year, we became one of the top three day care centres in Barrie! Check it out here.

On October 20th, we hosted the Child & Family Collaborative’s “Joy of Childhood Conference 2018” at Discovery Child Care.

2018 also marked Discovery’s 20th anniversary! We celebrated with friends and families, had lots of pizza, and enjoyed the outdoors. Thank you again everyone who could make it – you made it a special event!

We explored gourds and carving jack-o-lanterns for Halloween, too. This year, we had the idea to return the jack-o-lanterns to the wild as a snack for our squirrel and chipmunk friends!

To prepare for the holiday season, we began painting and decorating our toy and food donation bin to help the families in need. Everyone pitched in, and together we delivered our toys and food! It was amazing seeing everyone come together, and put a team effort into making the holidays special for those in need. Thank you to those who donated!

2018 was a magical year, full of opportunities, exploration and a whole lot of time in the great outdoors! We’re excited to see what 2019 brings us, and we hope you come along for the ride.
