Preschool Programs

We believe that children learn best in positive and engaging outdoor environments. Our preschool children have regular and repeated access to the natural world by spending the majority of their day in our Nature Classroom. Through this, children are receiving an educational experience while engaging in active exploration, inquiry, and play.

Each day at Discovery, children are offered learning experiences in outdoor spaces that invite them to investigate, imagine, create, solve problems, and make meaning from their experiences with interesting and complex open-ended materials. Our environments, learning experiences, transitions and routines support children’s growing autonomy and independence. All our experiences support children’s connections to and interactions with the natural world and enhance children’s natural sense of wonder and joy that sets the foundation for optimal success.

Room Schedule

The daily schedule is flexible and allows for playful learning throughout the day, where children have choice of activities and learning centres. There are opportunities for indoor & outdoor play, active & quiet play, nutrition breaks & rest time throughout the day. The flow of the day is based on the interests, needs, developmental level and abilities of all children. There are a minimum of transitions & interruptions of the children’s play throughout the day.

Room Structure

We have two preschool classrooms. Each one is licensed for 24 children.

Preschool #1 is licensed for 24 children, ages 2.5-5 years. There are 3 teachers working with the children. We may have room for 3 toddlers 18 mos-2.5 years in with the pre-school group providing it is an appropriate fit for them. The children have a rest time with the opportunity for a nap in this program.

Preschool #2 is licensed for 24 children, ages, 2.5-5 years. The children in this room need to be fully toilet trained (no diaper changing facilities). The children in this room do not have a nap time. There are 3 teachers working with the children.

Preschool Information

We believe that childcare is a partnership between your family and the child care centre. Sharing of information is a vital component of a high quality child care program. Our family information board is one way that we can keep you informed. Items such as menus, daily schedules as well as articles, etc., can be found on the board. Please let us know if there is something you would like to see posted. Please feel free to speak with any of your child’s teachers regarding your child and their development. Appointments may also be booked outside of regular childcare hours. Feel free to call to book an appointment.

Children in our Preschool #1 room do not need to be toilet trained. Each child develops at his or her own pace. We will work on toilet training with you and your child in a no-pressure, respectful way. Please let us know what method you follow so that we may provide as much consistency for your child as possible. Parents are required to provide diapers and wipes for their child if needed. We encourage and accept cloth diapers.

Due to public health regulations regarding diaper changing facilities, children in our Senior Preschool room must be fully toilet trained.

In our Preschool #1 program:

Children have their own cot. Please ensure that your child has a blanket for their bed. Your blanket will be sent home on every Friday for washing. Please remember to return it to the centre on Monday. The children go down for their naps/rest after lunch, around 12:30 pm. Children who do not normally sleep will be given quiet activities on their beds.

In Preschool #2 program:

There is no nap time in the senior preschool room.

Please label everything!

Blanket for sleeptime.
2 full changes of clothes (replenish as needed).
Appropriate clothing for the season. We go out in all weather (snow pants, mittens, rain suit, sun hat, boots, etc).
Indoor shoes that can stay at the centre.
Diapers and wipes. We accept and encourage the use of cloth diapers.
A "wet" bag that goes between home and the centre.

We will put your child's dirty/wet clothing in it (instead of plastic bags).
