Discovery Child Care offers engaging full-day or half-day learning opportunities for you and your staff. All attendees will receive a certificate of completion after completing each course. These valuable courses will provide you with the skills and dispositions to be a leader within your organization for nature-based programming.
We offer 1-hour study tours, 2-hour staff meetings, half-day and full-day programs that can be custom built to suit your needs. We can present in our Nature Classroom or come and present at your location.
Our Harvie Road location in Barrie sits on approx. 2 acres of natural landscape. Our Nature Classroom is comprised of multiple Outdoor Learning Centres that participants will explore. There are washrooms and drinking water available on site for visitors.
Visitors have access to an indoor space, however, please note that most programs take place outside and visitors must come prepared to remain outside in all weather conditions. Participants should dress appropriately.
At Discovery:
Study Tours are usually 1 hour in length. Can be done Monday-Friday between 12pm-2pm. Half-day programs and full-day programs are offered on weekends.

Participants will be taken on a guided tour of the Nature Classroom and outdoor facilities. We will discuss how to set up a nature classroom, the benefits to connecting children with nature and how to facilitate a nature-based program. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and take photos throughout the tour.
Participants will experience the benefits of introducing fire activities with children. We will discuss how to set up and operate a fire area that runs in compliance with all governing agencies. Participants will learn how to introduce the concepts of fire, set safety rules with the children and incorporate this into their regular program.
Participants will tour the Children’s Garden onsite at the Harvie Road location. We will discuss how to incorporate gardening into the program and why it is important that we include the children in these experiences. We will cover different species of plants, vegetables and fruits that are best to plant with kids.
We will discuss how to create a supportive environment for RECE’s and assistants in a nature-based program. Staff will be provided with leadership strategies and approaches to staff training. Participants will take part in discussions and will be led though scenario-based questions as a group.

A forest school is an outdoor education model that focuses on using outdoor spaces to help children learn personal, social and technical skills. To put it simply, forest schools take the learning outside.
